Hello! My name is Allison and I am a math and science tutor with ten years of experience. I have a Masters degree in Astronomy & Astrophysics from the University of Michigan, and now I am tutoring in the Floral Park, NY area and online.
I started tutoring when I was in high school, helping students in elementary, middle, and high school with math, science, social studies, and English. It started as just a good high school job that I could fit in around sports, but I started to realize that I loved it, and I got better at it as time when on. I was helping people excel in subjects that I enjoyed, and it felt great!
I continued tutoring when I went to the University of Maryland, where I earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Astronomy and Physics, graduating cum laude with High Honors in Astronomy. I first tutored introductory astronomy and then worked at a math tutoring center, where I helped groups of students with a specific subject (and sometimes even two different subjects on busy nights), ranging from algebra to calculus. My specialty there was pre-calculus. I then founded a tutoring program for introductory astronomy for majors, the class for which I also was a teaching assistant. My tutoring program helped many students gain confidence and achieve better grades!
I worked as a teaching assistant in graduate school as well, and continued tutoring as a private tutor. I helped high school students in geometry, pre-calculus, French, English, biology, and social studies, and a college student in physics. My students became visibly less anxious after our sessions, and often got As on quizzes and tests!
After all this time tutoring and teaching, I decided it was time to start my own tutoring business. The result is Strong STEM Tutoring – where you or your student can build a strong foundation in math and science!
Besides tutoring, I love music (piano, cello, and guitar), cooking and baking, crochet and knitting, gardening, and traveling (especially internationally). I have a food blog where I share recipes I’ve developed and my experiences with recipes written by others, unusual ingredients found at the farmers market, and growing my own food.
